Description
The date on the rock on the West Virginia WV state flag commemorates the year that West Virginia became a separate state from Virginia. A flag was commissioned for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904, but it was double-sided and highly impractical. When the present flag was adopted in 1929, the designs – the state seal and the state flower – were combined onto one side. The rest of the design shows what people were doing and thinking about during that time. The two men stand for farming and mining. The two rifles with a liberty cap on top stand for freedom.
